Day one of our Roman Holiday today. Our walking, walking, walking holiday.
(Just a note on our hotel
Good things:
- beautiful décor, quiet at night and nice staff who speak English (for Paul) and Italian (for Gab)
Bad things ie Areas for Improvement:
- poor location, teeny room, difficult to operate shower, rock hard mattress, only one room key and no tissues (in a 4 star hotel for @#$% sake))
Today we did a practice trip to the Trevi Fountain reportedly (by the hotel) 350m from the hotel. Add 'no idea about measurement and time' to list of areas for improvement.
OK, the navigator took us a slightly longer route given she had no time to prepare but at least 40 minutes of walking via interesting .(yes they were) detours. Our early start however meant we were there before all the crowds. Beautiful.
I had no change to throw in so I will never return to the fountain according to folklore. Actually
going back tomorrow. Maybe........
We then walked to where we stayed last time which was very close to the fountain. We made the brave decision to walk to the Vatican to fulfil Paul's dream of climbing the coppola of St Paul's Cathedral. Passing a number of fountains and climbing a few stairs via more detours, we came upon hordes of people walking towards the Vatican. As we arrived we were approached by people selling stuff about popes, saints or something like that. Something big had happened the previous sunday. Sainthood for former popes. And Wednesday is when the current not-yet-sainted pope gives a blessing to thousands of people in St. Peter's square. Today, after sainthood Sunday, there were even
more thousands of people than usual including people with Polish flags (???)
above are photos of the Spanish Steps,(more bloody stairs)
We even went back to the Trevi fountain later on as it is spectular at night.
