Today we had a day in Capri, (note: not capree but carpri)
Not an easy place to get to from our hotel in Sorrento.
Started with a ride in an elevator(requiring a return ticket) and then a hydrafoil from Sorrento to Capri. From the port we were taken by foot to the boat for our cruise around the island. Expecting a cruise boat, we were a little surprised to find we were to board a large dinghy-like vessel that could barely seat us all around its sides. So close to the water, I could reach down and touch the sea. In fact it touched me a number of times. Such beauty, history and mythology. A truly wonderful place.
After surviving the 'cruise', we boarded a one-way funicular to take us to the town of Capri. After a brief tour of the gardens and other nice places, we explored the shops looking for Brad Pitt , Sophia Loren and other famous people we were assured shopped here.
On our return, we drove down to the port in open air luxurious taxis, (as might Brad Pitt and Sophia Loren), back to the launch/hydrafoil, elevator etc. to our hotel in Sorrento.
For our last night on the tour, we were taken to a local restaurant for a great meal. It was a huge place, also hosting what appeared to be 3 different weddings with the one band. We could tell there were 3 as there were 3 different sets of bridesmaids. A real cost saver: hint hint.
Aside: being our last night, we were advised by our companions, Americans, that we were in fact required to tip both the tour guide, Alison, and the driver, Benito.. This was in the information we had received regarding the tour. Must have missed that as was a bit of a surprise to us. Making it worse was the fact that we had no money as our Travelex cards had no money on them because of a slight misunderstanding regarding how long it took for money to be transferred etc. and no internet to put money in.
(More aside, the wifi on this trip has been useless, more useless, and at times non- existent. A 'to the point' phone call to the Travelex people who would only speak to one of us, not the nicer one nor the one who could do the computer $&@?, got us nowhere, not even to the manager or supervisor. Luckily one of us had australian cash so we had some money and could pay the enormous 'tip'. All very frustrating)
Benito the driver has been helping gab get on and off the bus since her accident and has been lovely. After giving him the tip, we mentioned we were planning to do some driving ourselves in Italy. He burst out laughing. Not quite the reaction we were expecting.
a photo of our group taken at the greek theatre some days ago, some place neither of us remember now.
