4/5
Today we left Roma to start our trip down to the boot (heel and toe) and finally to Sicilia.
We began by 'passing the hilltop monastery of Monte Cassino and cross the Appenines to some of the less travelled provinces of Italy', as per trip itinerary.
We stopped at our first Autogrill, the equivalent of Aussie service stations. Interesting but no one on the bus knew how it worked.
The Italian way is to go to the food counter, check out what you want, then go to the cash register, not close to the counter, pay, be issued with a ticket which you then take back to the food counter and try to get what you paid for. None of this is obvious and there are no signs in any language. A little frustrating for those among us who are used to getting what they want NOW.
After lunch,we stopped at Mattera, famous for the 'extraordinary 'Sassi', troglodyte dwellings and churches dug out of rocks'.
Mattera is also famous for being the setting for Mel Gibson's movie, Passion of the Christ. Even so it was an amazing place but really cold, particularly cold for those of us not dressed for the cold weather. About 17degrees but with a cooler wind. Bracing.....was one of our nicer descriptive words.
